The Blugold Mile

The Latest Strides

Eau Claire Marathon News

He did it - again.

For the second year in a row, David Luy set a new Eau Claire Marathon record.

After shaving 1 minute, 13 seconds off the record time last year, Luy smashed his previous record by nearly seven minutes Sunday.

Luy, a 25-year-old from Brookfield, completed the 26.2-mile course in 2 hours, 25 minutes and 57 seconds.

He said he felt incredible support leading up to the marathon and during it, and that played a major factor in his success Sunday.

"I've put more focus into recovery and on the little things," Luy said. "I had some injuries that set me back (last year), but this year it's pretty much been smooth sailing."

Shortly after the start, Luy was concerned he may run out of gas too early. He was hungry, thirsty and starting to feel higher temperatures than he expected. Luy said he made sure right away to take in gel and water whenever he could and prepare for the worst.

Unlike last year, Luy had two pace bikes with him. An added bonus for Luy was that one of the bikers was his girlfriend Evelyn.

"We met last May after this race and ever since then she's been at every race of mine," Luy said. "... every time it puts a smile on my face when I see her out there. It takes my mind off the pain for that section and helps me get through tougher parts of the course."

His previous best at the Eau Claire Marathon was 2 hours, 32 minutes and 50 seconds.

In their Eau Claire half marathon debuts, former UW-Eau Claire runners Brent Kann and Jason Finch finished in first and second place, respectively.

Kann, a 30-year-old from Eau Claire, finished the race in 1 hour, 10 minutes and 58 seconds, while Finch finished in 1 hour, 11 minutes and 49 seconds.

Finch, a 40-year-old from Hudson, said the course was pleasant throughout, and he only wished he could have kept pace with his fellow alumnus.

"We were together until seven or eight miles in," Finch said. "I picked up a cramp, he gapped me and I could see him for the rest of the way."

Finch was inducted to the Blugold Hall of Fame last fall. He is credited as one of the best distance runners in school history and had five All-American finishes in cross country and track.

Blugolds alum Margaret Ho also made her debut at the event and was the top female finisher in the marathon.

Ho, a 28-year-old from La Crosse, finished the route in 3 hours, 8 minutes and 58 seconds. She said it could have been less warm, but it doesn't get much better for the first weekend in May.

"I wasn't expecting the gradual incline around the middle of the race, but I got through it," Ho said. "I've done a lot of marathons, and this is a wonderful sized one. Running through campus and having all the cheering was incredible."

She was part of the 2009 NCAA Division III women's cross country national championship team at UW-Eau Claire.

"To come back and run a marathon brought back a lot of memories of working with teammates and slugging through tough workouts together," Ho said. "It really motivated me to keep running today."

Rebekka Dow, a 35-year-old from Eau Claire, competed in the half marathon and was the top female finisher with a time of 1 hour, 25 minutes and 30 seconds.

This was Dow's third year at the event, and she said two things likely helped her beat out the rest this time around: being healthy and having some extra time away from her kids.

"I was sick the last two times I ran," Dow said. "I have two little girls, and they're older now so I get to run a little more now, so that helps."

Dow, then known as Rebekka Lundquist, won at the local Buckshot Run in 2001 and 2002 before taking a 14-year absence. She returned to that race last fall and claimed the women's title once again.
