Boston Qualifying Marathons in Wisconsin

Looking for a Boston Qualifier in Wisconsin?

If qualifying for the Boston Marathon is one of your running goals, Wisconsin offers several marathon opportunities where runners can pursue a qualifying time.

A Boston qualifying marathon must meet specific certification and timing requirements established by the Boston Athletic Association. In the United States, qualifying courses are typically certified by USA Track & Field (USATF). Boston Athletic Association

Whether you're chasing your first BQ, trying to improve your qualifying time or simply looking for a certified 26.2-mile course, here's what to know when choosing a Boston qualifying marathon in Wisconsin.

What Is a Boston Qualifying Marathon?

A Boston qualifying marathon—or Boston qualifier/BQ—is a marathon run on a course that meets the Boston Athletic Association's requirements for qualifying performances.

For a U.S. marathon, that includes a certified 26.2-mile course. The race must also meet additional requirements involving official participation, timing and race administration. Virtual marathons, indoor marathons and distances shorter than a full marathon cannot be used to qualify. Boston Athletic Association

Running a qualifying marathon is only the first part of the process. You must also run at or under the qualifying standard for your age and gender.

What Should You Look for in a Boston Qualifying Marathon?

Not all Boston qualifying courses provide the same race experience.

When choosing your race, consider more than whether the course is certified.

Course Elevation

Look at both total elevation gain and where that elevation occurs.

A course with early rolling terrain followed by a faster second half can race very differently from a course with significant climbs in the final miles.

Time of Year

Consider the conditions you'll train in as well as the conditions you're likely to encounter on race day.

A spring marathon means much of your training may happen during the winter, while a fall marathon generally requires your biggest training weeks during summer.

Course Size & Congestion

Think about the environment in which you race best. Some runners thrive in large urban races, while others prefer smaller events where they have more room to settle into their pace.

Pace Groups

If you're pursuing a specific qualifying time, experienced pace groups can help you maintain a consistent pace throughout the marathon.

Race-Day Support

Water stations, nutrition, medical support, spectators and volunteers can all become increasingly important during the later miles of a marathon.

Why Consider a Spring Boston Qualifier?

A spring marathon can be especially appealing for runners who want to pursue a qualifying time early in the year.

For Midwest runners, that typically means completing much of marathon training during winter and racing as temperatures begin to warm.

A May marathon can also give runners the summer and fall to recover, reset and decide what comes next in their running season.

For runners considering Eau Claire, Marathon Weekend takes place May 1–2, 2027, with the Marathon on Sunday, May 2.

2027 Boston Marathon Qualifying Standards

A qualifying time does not guarantee Boston Marathon entry. The B.A.A. receives more qualifying applications than it can necessarily accept, so meeting your age-group standard gives you the opportunity to apply rather than guaranteed acceptance.

How Much Faster Than My BQ Should I Run?

If Boston is your goal, don't assume hitting your published qualifying standard guarantees a spot.

For the 2026 Boston Marathon, qualified applicants ultimately needed to be 4 minutes, 34 seconds faster than their qualifying standard to gain entry through the standard selection process; 8,887 qualifiers were not accepted through that process. Boston's cutoff has varied considerably from year to year.

For 2027, the B.A.A. also introduced an additional Boston Qualifier Selection process for approximately 1,000 qualifiers whose times met their standards but did not beat the eventual cutoff.

Because the cutoff isn't known in advance, many runners pursuing Boston aim to build a cushion beyond their published qualifying standard.

What makes a marathon course good for a Boston qualifying attempt?

There's no single course that's best for every runner. When choosing a marathon for a Boston qualifying attempt, consider total elevation gain, where hills occur, typical race-day weather, course congestion, pace groups and race-day support. A course that matches your strengths and allows you to maintain a consistent pace can be just as important as total elevation gain.
