April Podcast #2: Adam & Emily

Your Race Is Already Won: How to Make the Most of Eau Claire Marathon Weekend

By the time race weekend arrives, the hard part is over.

Months of early mornings, long runs, missed social events, and countless miles have already prepared you for what's ahead. Race weekend isn't about cramming in more fitness. It's about trusting your training, soaking in the experience, and enjoying everything the Eau Claire Marathon has to offer.

In this week's episode of Running on Air, Emily and I skipped the guest interview and sat down to talk through one of our favorite topics: how to have your best race weekend.

One of the biggest challenges runners face isn't race day itself. It's taper week.

If you've ever felt sluggish, restless, or convinced you've somehow lost all of your fitness in the final week before a race, you're not alone. Almost every runner experiences it. The key is resisting the temptation to change anything. Keep your sleep schedule consistent, eat the foods you've been eating throughout training, stay hydrated, and avoid experimenting with anything new. Your body already knows what works.

The same goes for race morning.

Wear the shoes you've trained in. Eat the breakfast you've practiced with. Lay out your gear the night before so you aren't making decisions at 4:00 a.m. The less you have to think about on race morning, the more energy you can save for the miles ahead.

One thing I always recommend is giving yourself permission to think about the race. Instead of trying to ignore those pre-race nerves, channel them into something productive. Review the course map, think through your fueling plan, and picture yourself moving confidently through each section of the course. Visualization can turn nervous energy into confidence.

Once you're in Eau Claire, don't rush through the weekend.

Spend time at the Expo, talk with vendors, attend a course preview, and ask questions if you have them. If you're racing on Sunday, stop by the finish line for Saturday's 5K and 10K. Watching runners cross the line is one of the best ways to build excitement for your own race.

The courses themselves offer something special at every stage.

The half marathon starts fast and energetic before settling into a rhythm. As you reach the later miles, the atmosphere builds with cheering crowds, neighborhood parties, the Blugold Mile, and the Rainbow Mile carrying you toward the finish.

The full marathon showcases some of Eau Claire's most scenic areas, including beautiful stretches along the Chippewa River. Later in the race, the energy returns as marathoners rejoin the half marathon course for an unforgettable final 10K filled with spectators, music, and encouragement. Even the infamous wild turkeys earned a mention on the podcast, although we're confident they'll be safely off the course this year.

What makes Eau Claire Marathon weekend unique isn't just the course. It's everything surrounding it.

Our committee spends the entire year thinking about the runner experience. From convenient shuttles and family-friendly activities to local restaurant discounts through Bib Perks, every detail is designed to make your weekend memorable. After you cross the finish line, the celebration continues with the Barstow Block Party, live music, great food, local businesses, and plenty of opportunities to celebrate with friends and family.

As we wrapped up the episode, Emily and I realized that many of our favorite marathon memories weren't personal records or finish times. They were the moments in between. The cheering neighborhoods. The conversations with volunteers. The excitement at the Expo. The feeling of being surrounded by thousands of people chasing the same goal.

Whether this is your first Eau Claire Marathon or you've been coming back for years, take time to enjoy it all.

You've earned this weekend.

Trust your training, embrace the energy, and let our community carry you to the finish line. We can't wait to cheer you on.
