January Podcast Guest: Danny Docherty
Chasing Potential: A Conversation with Danny Docherty on Racing, Coaching, and Staying Grounded
We kicked off our 2026 season of Running on Air with a guest who perfectly captures what it means to chase potential, stay grounded, and give back to the running community. We had the chance to sit down with local elite runner and coach Danny Docherty, and his story is one that so many runners can relate to, whether you are just starting out or chasing your next PR.
Danny did not grow up as a runner. Like a lot of athletes, he played multiple sports before finding his stride. It was not until high school that running started to click. From there, he leaned into the sport, competed at the collegiate level, and eventually stepped into the elite running scene. What stood out right away was his mindset. He did not chase running because it was easy or because success came instantly. He chased it because he wanted to see how good he could become.
That curiosity still drives him today. Danny talked about how success builds on itself. One milestone leads to another, and before you know it, you are asking what comes next. Even setbacks, including injuries during college, did not push him away from the sport. Instead, they reinforced his belief that he still had more to give.
We also talked about his experience racing in Eau Claire, including his win at the half marathon. What stuck with him was not just the result, but the atmosphere. He described the energy on the course, the mix of runners at every level, and the unique challenge of the course itself. If you have run Eau Claire, you know exactly what he means about those bridge crossings. They keep you honest.
One of the most interesting parts of our conversation was how Danny approaches training. During his Eau Claire races, he was not just showing up to compete. He was stacking efforts as part of a larger marathon build. He raced a 10K, followed it with a 5K, and then came back the next morning for the half marathon. That kind of training requires discipline, awareness, and a willingness to adapt.
As a coach, Danny brings that same thoughtful approach to the athletes he works with. He focuses on breaking running down into simple, manageable pieces. It is not just about the miles. It is about how you warm up, how you fuel, how you recover, and how you build consistency over time. He meets athletes where they are and helps them take the next step forward.
One piece of advice he shared really stuck with us. Do not get too high or too low. Running comes with waves. Some days feel effortless, and others feel like a grind. Learning to navigate both is part of the process. That lesson applies far beyond running.
We also talked about training through Midwest winters, which every local runner understands all too well. Danny emphasized flexibility. Take advantage of good weather when you get it. Adjust when conditions are tough. Build your base early in the season, then sharpen as race day approaches. It is not about perfect conditions. It is about consistency over time.
At the elite level, Danny has developed routines that allow him to show up, do the work, and move on with his day. That approach is something every runner can learn from. Whether you have two hours or thirty minutes, the key is to make the decision to show up and follow through.
As we wrapped up, Danny shared what is ahead for him in 2026, including a build toward Grandma’s Marathon and hopefully another appearance in Eau Claire. If that happens, do not be surprised if he lines up for multiple events again.
Conversations like this remind us why we do this podcast. Running is simple, but it is never easy. It challenges you, teaches you, and connects you with a community that keeps showing up. Danny’s story is a great example of what can happen when you stay curious, stay consistent, and keep putting one foot in front of the other.
