March Podcast Guest #2: Luke Alexopoulos
More Than a Marathon: Why Eau Claire Is the Perfect Racecation Destination
One of the questions we hear all the time is, "Why should I travel to Eau Claire for a marathon?"
The answer is simple. The Eau Claire Marathon is more than a race. It's an experience.
On this bonus episode of Running on Air, we sat down with Luke Alexopoulos from Visit Eau Claire to talk about what makes our community such a special place to visit. As race weekend gets closer, we wanted to give runners a behind-the-scenes look at the city they'll experience before, during, and after crossing the finish line.
Luke described Eau Claire with three words: creative, musical, and active. I couldn't think of a better way to introduce people to our hometown.
From colorful murals and one of the nation's largest sculpture tours to live music filling parks and patios throughout the week, Eau Claire has an energy that surprises first-time visitors. Add in more than 77 miles of connected trails, beautiful rivers, and endless opportunities to get outside, and it's easy to understand why so many people end up extending their stay after race weekend.
One thing that really stood out during our conversation was how much Eau Claire offers despite being a mid-sized city. Visitors often expect to arrive, run their race, and head home. Instead, they discover walkable neighborhoods, outstanding local restaurants, breweries, coffee shops, family attractions, and a downtown that stays busy long after the finish line festivities are over.
One of my favorite parts about marathon weekend is watching people realize they don't need to rush anywhere. Park downtown, leave your car, and spend the weekend exploring on foot. It's one of the many reasons we've proudly called ourselves "The Biggest Small-Town Race in the U.S."
We also talked about something our team has noticed over the last several years: more runners are planning racecations. Instead of simply traveling to complete another marathon, they're choosing destinations where they can build an entire weekend around the event.
Eau Claire fits that perfectly.
Families can spend time at the Children's Museum, Metropolis Resort, Four Treasures Indoor Playground, or exploring local parks and trails. Outdoor enthusiasts can rent bikes and experience miles of scenic paths that wind through forests, rivers, and neighborhoods. Music lovers can catch live performances almost any night of the week, while foodies have no shortage of locally owned restaurants and breweries to enjoy after the race.
Of course, race day itself is what brings everyone together.
Luke admitted he's never actually run the Eau Claire Marathon, but after spectating for several years, he shared something that resonated with both of us. He gets emotional watching runners cross the finish line.
Honestly, we understand exactly what he means.
Whether someone is chasing a Boston Qualifier, finishing their very first half marathon, or simply accomplishing a personal goal, the support from this community is something you have to experience in person. The crowds never seem to disappear. Neighbors line the streets. Volunteers cheer from every corner. The famous Blugold Mile transforms into one giant celebration that carries runners through some of the toughest miles of the course.
That community support is also why the Eau Claire Marathon continues to grow. Luke shared that race weekend generates an estimated $5.3 million in economic impact for our local businesses. Hotels fill, restaurants stay busy, and visitors discover a community that many never knew existed before signing up for the race.
By the end of our conversation, one message became incredibly clear.
People may register for the Eau Claire Marathon because they're looking for a great race, but they come back because of the experience.
The scenic course, welcoming community, energetic spectators, local businesses, and vibrant downtown all combine to create something that's difficult to put into words until you've experienced it yourself.
So if you're joining us for race weekend this spring, don't just come for the miles.
Come early. Stay late. Explore our trails, enjoy the local restaurants, listen to live music, and discover why so many runners now call Eau Claire one of their favorite racecation destinations.
