FEET-URED RUNNER: Ryan & Rainy with Training is better together
“After kids, work obligations, and getting older, I used to think the dream of running a full marathon looked like it may never happen. Both myself and Rainy are from Lincoln, NE. She's an avid runner and has run over a dozen marathons and has been a true inspiration for me. She introduced me to a local running group this past winter where I met a lot of runners and participated in a 16 week marathon training class for beginners.
The class focused on building your foundation and gradually increasing mileage, as well as nutrition, diet, physical and mental preparation. With a January start, running conditions were very interesting. In case you are not familiar with Nebraska and its weather, we have a saying here, ‘If you don't like the weather, wait a minute...it will change!’
There were many weeks I didn't know if I could keep up with the mileage progression. There were days where I ran harder and faster than I thought possible, and there were days I just felt off. In the end, I finished the class and successfully built a foundation that gave me the confidence I needed going into Eau Claire. I don't believe I could have completed the full marathon without that class and encourage every new runner to join one if they are new to running and serious about doing a full 26.2 miles.
When race day came I absolutely loved the cheering crowds and support from the entire area that came to watch the runners. The best moment was definitely entering the Blugold Mile and heading into town towards the end. I loved the pumped up college kids and cheering crowds as I passed by, because the noise really got the adrenaline going. Once I felt that energy, I knew I would have enough gas in the tank to achieve my goal.
I'll never forget the 2025 Eau Claire Marathon for the rest of my life. I'm very proud to have been a part of it and hope to return again in future years.”
